OpenAI is actively exploring the development of humanoid robots, as indicated by a recent job posting from the company's hardware head. The announcement reveals that OpenAI is restructuring its robotics division to focus on creating autonomous robots and custom sensor suites. Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI in November after leading hardware efforts in Meta's AR glasses division, is spearheading these initiatives.
The robotics team at OpenAI aims to develop "general-purpose," "adaptive," and "versatile" robots capable of operating in dynamic real-world environments similar to humans. This involves designing new sensors and computing components, which will be supported by AI models developed in-house by OpenAI. Additionally, the company is seeking an engineer experienced in designing mechanical systems for mass production, suggesting plans for large-scale manufacturing of these robots.
Robotics is not OpenAI's only hardware focus. Last year, former Apple product designer Jony Ive confirmed his collaboration with OpenAI on a new device. Moreover, OpenAI is reportedly working on a custom chip designed to run its AI models efficiently.
