Microsoft has announced the creation of a new division focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI) applications and providing tools for third-party clients. This new department, named "Core AI Platform and Tools," will be led by Jay Parikh, former CEO of cybersecurity startup Lacework and former global engineering head at Meta. Parikh's expertise spans technology and engineering management, with a focus on cybersecurity and large-scale tech infrastructure.
CEO Satya Nadella emphasized that the goal of this new division is to build a comprehensive end-to-end AI application development ecosystem, encompassing everything from development to deployment and operation. This aligns with Microsoft's broader AI strategy, particularly in the competitive generative AI and AI platform space, where the company aims to maintain its leadership.
Previously, Microsoft appointed DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead the Copilot AI project, highlighting its commitment to AI innovation. Parikh will collaborate closely with senior leaders like Suleyman, Scott Guthrie, and Kevin Scott to advance Microsoft's AI and cloud computing strategies.
AI has become a central topic in the tech industry, especially since OpenAI launched ChatGPT. As a major investor in OpenAI, Microsoft leverages its Azure cloud platform to support OpenAI's large language models and employs these models in internal AI applications, such as content generation and code creation.
Despite its partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft is independently developing similar or competing products. In filings with the SEC, Microsoft identified OpenAI as a competitor, reflecting their complex relationship. Nadella highlighted the importance of cross-department collaboration to enhance responsiveness and innovation, stating that success in AI will depend on building a robust platform, comprehensive tools, and reliable infrastructure.
