Google (GOOGL, Financial) has introduced an official iOS app for its AI chatbot, Gemini, aiming to compete with ChatGPT on the mobile front. However, despite the launch, Google remains significantly behind both ChatGPT and Claude in terms of paid user subscriptions.
Recent data highlights that while Google is a pioneer in AI foundational research, it lags in the AI application field. ChatGPT and Claude hold strong positions due to their earlier market entry. Earnest Analytics reports that around 60% of users who subscribed to Gemini Advanced continue paying after six months, compared to over 70% for ChatGPT Plus and slightly above 60% for Claude Pro, developed by Anthropic, supported by giants like Amazon (AMZN) and Google.
Gemini Advanced charges $19.99 monthly, part of the Google One AIPremium program offering additional storage and benefits. In comparison, ChatGPT Plus costs $20 monthly, providing access to advanced models and features. Google has not disclosed Gemini's user numbers, but OpenAI, backed by Microsoft (MSFT), claims approximately 300 million weekly ChatGPT users. ChatGPT's app downloads surpass 465 million, while Gemini's are roughly 106 million.
Despite Gemini's ability to handle diverse data forms and its integration within Google's ecosystem, ChatGPT and Claude excel in language understanding and generation. Google's CEO Sundar Pichai recently expressed confidence in Gemini's AI capabilities, aiming for over 500 million users by year's end.
