Microsoft (MSFT, Financial)-backed OpenAI is teaming up with U.S. National Laboratories to enhance scientific research using its latest AI reasoning models.
The collaboration will deploy OpenAI's O1 or another O-series model on Venado, an Nvidia (NVDA, Financial) supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory, serving researchers from Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia National Labs. Venado was built to drive breakthroughs in materials science, renewable energy, and astrophysics.
OpenAI says its advanced models will also help develop new disease treatments, strengthen cybersecurity, and improve detection of natural and man-made threats, including biological and cyber risks. The AI models will support efforts to enhance U.S. energy leadership, unlocking natural resources and transforming infrastructure.
Additionally, the partnership will contribute to nuclear security, focusing on reducing the risk of nuclear conflict and safeguarding nuclear materials. OpenAI emphasized that AI safety will remain a priority, with selective oversight and consultations from security-cleared researchers.
