SoftBank Group is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Ampere Computing LLC, a chip design company backed by Oracle Corporation. The potential deal values Ampere at approximately $6.5 billion, including debt. Insiders suggest that the transaction could be announced in the coming weeks, though there is still a possibility of delays or halts in the negotiations.
Ampere specializes in producing processors for data center equipment using Arm technology. Previously, Bloomberg News reported that Ampere was valued at over $8 billion during SoftBank's proposed minority stake investment in 2021. However, the competitive landscape in the chip market has intensified since then, with major tech companies vying to develop products similar to those manufactured by Ampere.
Neither Ampere, Arm, nor SoftBank have commented on the ongoing discussions.
