Elon Musk's xAI has officially launched Grok 3, and it's making some big claims. Musk says it's “an order of magnitude more capable than Grok-2” and built to be the most truth-seeking AI yet.
The new model was trained in a Memphis-based data center using a whopping 200,000 GPUs, giving it 10 times the computing power of its predecessor. It also pulled in a broader dataset, now including legal filings to boost its knowledge base.
Unlike a one-size-fits-all chatbot, Grok 3 comes in different versions—Grok 3 mini, Grok 3 Reasoning, and Grok 3 mini Reasoning—each fine-tuned for specific tasks like problem-solving and advanced computations. xAI isn't just releasing another AI—it's going after the biggest names in the space.
The company claims Grok 3 outperforms OpenAI's GPT-4o on major reasoning and math benchmarks, including AIME 2025. It's also set to compete directly with ChatGPT, Google's (GOOG, GOOGL) Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude. Meanwhile, Tesla (TSLA, Financial)—another Musk-led company—has been on a wild ride. The stock is down 16.6% over the past month but has climbed 5% in the last three months and is still up over 64% in the past six months.
