Meta Platforms (META, Financial) is planning to test a paid subscription service for its AI chatbot, Meta AI, according to sources. This move mirrors similar services offered by OpenAI and Microsoft (MSFT) for accessing premium versions of their chatbots. The testing phase is expected to begin in the second quarter, but significant revenue from the subscription is not anticipated until next year.
Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is aiming to bolster the company's competitive position in the AI sector against Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google (GGOGL). Earlier this year, Zuckerberg announced plans to invest $65 billion in expanding Meta's AI infrastructure.
Additionally, Meta has reportedly established a new department within its Reality Labs to develop AI humanoid robots capable of assisting with physical tasks. The social media giant is also set to launch a standalone Meta AI application in the second quarter, which will be integrated with Facebook and Instagram.
