Apple announced that its AirPods Max headphones will soon support lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio when using the included USB-C cable. This upcoming update will enable AirPods Max to deliver 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio, preserving the original recording's quality. Apple stated that lossless audio will also enhance personalized spatial audio to provide a more precise, uncompressed, and immersive audio experience. Users will have access to over 100 million songs in lossless audio format via Apple Music.

The ultra-low latency audio feature will make AirPods Max more suitable for music production. With the USB-C cable, musicians can create and mix music using personalized spatial audio and head-tracking features without worrying about audio quality loss. Gamers will also benefit from ultra-low latency audio, experiencing reduced delay times when using AirPods Max.

These new features will be available in April as a free firmware update alongside iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 for AirPods Max with USB-C ports. It is important to note that these enhancements are exclusive to AirPods Max with USB-C interfaces and do not apply to the Lightning port versions.
