Taiwanese chip manufacturer United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC, Financial) and American company GlobalFoundries (GFS) are reportedly in discussions about a potential merger. According to the report, the merger would create a larger U.S.-based entity with operations spanning Asia, the U.S., and Europe. The combined company would prioritize research and development investment in the United States. This strategic move aims to position the new entity as a viable competitor to the world-leading chip manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM).
