OpenAI has announced its intention to release its first "open-source" language model since GPT-2 in the coming months. This information was shared through a feedback form on the company's website, inviting developers, researchers, and community members to provide input on what they would like to see in OpenAI's open-source model. The company plans to host developer events to gather feedback, with the first event scheduled in San Francisco, followed by events in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

OpenAI faces increasing pressure from competitors who have adopted open-source strategies, allowing the AI community to experiment and, in some cases, commercialize their models. This approach has proven successful for some, such as Meta, whose open-source AI model, Llama, has been downloaded over a billion times. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged the need for a different open-source strategy during a recent Reddit Q&A session, admitting that OpenAI may have been on the wrong side of history regarding open-sourcing its technology.

Altman elaborated on OpenAI's open-source model plans on social media, stating that the upcoming model will have reasoning capabilities similar to OpenAI's o3-mini. The model will undergo thorough evaluation before release, with additional efforts to anticipate modifications post-launch.
