German industrial giant Siemens (SIEGY, Financial) has announced a $5.1 billion acquisition of Dotmatics, a move aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence software offerings for life sciences companies. The deal is expected to complete in the first half of fiscal year 2026. Dotmatics CEO Thomas Swalla highlighted the synergy between their scientific intelligence platform and Siemens' digital twin and AI capabilities, suggesting a new wave of innovation in life sciences R&D.

This acquisition comes as Insight Partners, the financial backer of Dotmatics, is selling other portfolio companies to strategic buyers. Recent deals include Google's (GOOGL) acquisition of cloud security firm Wiz Inc., and CoreWeave's (CRWV) purchase of AI development platform Weights & Biases. Dotmatics, founded in 2005 by Merck (MRK) scientists, is used by over 2 million scientists in 125 countries, aiding in lab data digitization and research analysis.

Insight Partners initially invested in Dotmatics in 2017, and a fund backed by Insight agreed to acquire the UK-based company for up to £500 million ($648 million) in 2021. Evercore served as Dotmatics' exclusive financial advisor in this transaction, marking one of Siemens' largest acquisitions.
