Smartkem (SMTK) has unveiled its MicroLED Smart Backlight technology at the Touch Taiwan 2025 conference, aiming to set a new standard for Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) in the automotive industry. The company's latest innovation, MiP4, comprises a package of four MicroLEDs connected using Smartkem's proprietary chip-first architecture and interlayer dielectric semiconductor materials.
The demonstration features a 12.3-inch MicroLED Smart Backlight designed to deliver enhanced brightness and contrast in LCD screens commonly used in automotive applications. This technological advancement could have significant implications for the automotive display market, which is expected to exceed 25 million units by 2030. Each automotive display unit could potentially incorporate more than 500 MiP4s, highlighting a substantial market opportunity for Smartkem.
During the event, Smartkem's CEO Ian Jenks expressed enthusiasm about the potential of the MiP4 technology to revolutionize existing display markets, particularly in the automotive industry. He is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on the MicroLED Smart Backlight on April 16, 2025, at 16:00 local time at Touch Taiwan 2025.
The MicroLED Smart Backlight technology promises not only improved display quality but also potential reductions in manufacturing costs and compatibility with existing MiniLED die bonding equipment, making it an attractive option for the automotive sector. Smartkem continues to develop commercial-scale production processes to support the widespread adoption of this innovative technology.
