  • The MX908 device is designed to detect illicit drugs, including synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.
  • Fentanyl-related deaths in Texas have surged by 158% from 2020 to 2023.

908 Devices Inc. (MASS), a leader in handheld chemical analysis devices, has received a $2 million order from the Texas Department of Public Safety for its MX908 handheld mass spectrometry devices. This significant investment comes as part of a larger effort to combat the rising opioid crisis, particularly the spread of fentanyl.

The MX908 devices are equipped to detect and identify trace amounts of hazardous substances, providing first responders with critical and timely information. The devices are especially pertinent given the alarming increase in fentanyl-related deaths in Texas, which have risen by 158% from 2020 to 2023. This order builds upon an initial purchase made last year, further indicating the essential role these devices play in modernizing frontline detection capabilities.

The newly ordered devices were shipped in April and will be deployed across Texas, focusing on critical interdiction locations. Agencies such as the Criminal Investigations Division and Narcotics Enforcement will benefit from the enhanced detection technology as they work to mitigate the impact of illicit drug distribution in the region.
