Teledyne FLIR Defense, a division of Teledyne Technologies (TDY, Financial), has released a new whitepaper arguing that recoverable and reusable loitering munitions offer significant advantages over conventional one-way attack drones. The document titled "USE IT, DON’T LOSE IT: The Case for Recoverable and Reusable Loitering Munitions," presents these systems as cost-effective and mission-enhancing alternatives in modern combat scenarios.

The whitepaper highlights that these advanced loitering munitions are particularly well-suited to operations in the 'atmospheric littoral,' a strategic concept that encompasses very low-altitude airspace. By controlling this airspace, ground units can significantly enhance their combat maneuvers. In contrast, traditional FPV drones often represent a sunk cost due to their single-use nature, increasing the overall expense and operational complexity.

Teledyne’s Rogue 1™, a recoverable unmanned aircraft system (UAS), exemplifies the strategic benefits of precision strike capabilities. Its patented gimballed warhead allows unprecedented targeting accuracy, making it effective even with lighter payloads compared to larger, less precise fixed-wing platforms. This makes the Rogue 1™ a potent tool for disabling armored vehicles with precision.

According to Dave Viens, VP of US Business Development at Teledyne FLIR Defense, recoverable LMUAS not only provide small units a significant battlefield advantage but also promote efficient training and mission adaptability. The technologies integrated into the Rogue 1â„¢ are positioned to offer decisive advantages over traditional FPV drones, enhancing control over critical airspaces in modern warfare.

As military strategies evolve, the whitepaper also points out that future enhancements including AI tools like Aided Target Recognition (AiTR) will further expand the potential uses and effectiveness of these advanced munitions.
