In a joint research initiative, OpenVPN and TechTarget's Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) have unveiled new insights into the use of remote access technologies among small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs). The study, titled "Secure Access Technology Trends," highlights the continued relevance of VPN solutions within SMBs' security infrastructures.

The report counters the narrative that VPNs are obsolete, revealing that 71% of surveyed organizations still rely on VPNs for secure remote access. This data comes amidst a backdrop of increasing adoption of Zero Trust initiatives, particularly in the United States, where respondents were 72% more likely to notice improvements in security incidents after implementing these strategies.

According to the survey, conducted among 200 cybersecurity and IT professionals from businesses with 20 to 500 employees, U.S. respondents demonstrated a significantly higher familiarity with Zero Trust architectures than their counterparts in Australia and the UK.

Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of the companies currently not using VPN solutions indicated plans to adopt them within the next 12 to 24 months, emphasizing the enduring role VPNs play alongside emerging technologies like Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA).

OpenVPN continues to offer scalable, secure remote access solutions through its self-hosted VPN solution, Access Server, and cloud-delivered service, CloudConnexa. These tools are built on the widely trusted open-source OpenVPN protocol and are used by over 20,000 enterprise clients globally.
