Vuzix Corporation (VUZI), a prominent player in AI-powered smart glasses and Augmented Reality (AR) technology, along with Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS, has reached a significant milestone in the development of a custom microLED backplane. This collaboration has successfully produced initial samples of high-performance microLED backplanes tailored for advanced display applications.

The CMOS backplane, which supports 1080P+ resolution, has been adapted from existing OLED microdisplay technology to meet high-current microLED frontplane requirements. This design allows for both monochrome and full-color, micron-sized microLED arrays, indicating a leap in display technology.

This advancement targets the lucrative high-end enterprise and defense markets, with the development mainly funded by third-party customers of Vuzix.
