IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, disclosed that the company has incorporated AI agents to automate repetitive tasks, replacing hundreds of HR employees. This strategic move aligns with IBM's broader push to assess AI's impact on the workplace. AI agents handle tasks such as spreadsheet analysis, email drafting, and research, enabling IBM to redirect resources towards engineering and sales roles that demand human interaction and decision-making.

Despite the automation, IBM's overall workforce is expanding. The company hasn't specified the timing or scale of the job cuts but highlighted a shift towards roles offering higher value creation. This transformation coincides with IBM's annual "Think" developer conference in Boston, where it launched new services to help businesses build and integrate their AI agents.

The competition includes rivals such as Amazon (AMZN), OpenAI, NVIDIA (NVDA), and Microsoft (MSFT). Krishna emphasized IBM's open approach, facilitating the integration of various AI modules across different brands. Although IBM signed $6 billion in generative AI consulting contracts, it acknowledges potential impacts from economic challenges, like reduced consumer spending and geopolitical risks.
