- VIAVI Solutions (NASDAQ: VIAV) joins the European MORANE-2 project, focusing on the modernization of railway communications.
- The project aims to phase out the GSM-R system by 2030, replacing it with the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).
- VIAVI will use its EVOIA Drive Test and EVOIA Assure solutions for testing and monitoring FRMCS prototypes over the 34-month project period.
VIAVI Solutions (VIAV, Financial), a leader in network test and monitoring solutions, has announced its strategic participation in the MORANE-2 project, a pivotal European initiative. The project is set to test and validate the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) specifications, positioned to succeed the current Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway (GSM-R), which will be phased out by 2030.
The MORANE-2 project, spanning 34 months from 2024 to 2027, aims to establish product development standards that ensure efficient, sustainable, and resilient railway communications across Europe. VIAVI, as one of the select monitoring suppliers, will deploy its EVOIA Drive Test solution to aid in the network deployment of FRMCS. Additionally, the EVOIA Assure solution will be utilized to monitor and evaluate FRMCS prototypes in both laboratory environments and on actual railway tracks.
VIAVI’s technical contributions to the project include designing metrics, defining key performance indicators (KPIs), and providing state-of-the-art testing solutions. These efforts support critical applications such as the European Train Control System (ECTS), Automatic Train Operation (ATO), and real-time data and video services.
As a collaborative effort funded by Europe's Rail (EU-RAIL) and the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertakings, the MORANE-2 project represents a significant step towards modernizing railway telecommunications across Europe. This initiative aims to incorporate FRMCS specifications into the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI), which ensure system compatibility across European rail networks.
VIAVI’s participation in the MORANE-2 project underscores its commitment to advancing railway communications and reinforces its presence in the European railway communications sector. The company continues to showcase its robust test, measurement, and monitoring solutions at various industry events, further solidifying its role as a key player in the ongoing digital transformation of railway systems.
