WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD), a prominent player in the autonomous driving industry, has initiated fully driverless Robotaxi trial operations in Abu Dhabi. This development marks the first deployment of such technology in the Middle East, signifying a pivotal advancement in autonomous mobility within the region.

The expansion includes new service coverage to Al Maryah Island, known for being Abu Dhabi's financial center, and Al Reem Island, a key residential area. These additions are built on the existing network serving Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and the routes connecting to Zayed International Airport, which WeRide has been operating since 2021.

In 2023, WeRide achieved a significant milestone by securing the UAE's first and only national license for self-driving vehicles. This achievement enables comprehensive testing and operation of their autonomous vehicles across the nation, providing a robust competitive edge.

WeRide's strategic partnership with Uber, initiated in December 2024, promises to accelerate the adoption of autonomous vehicle technology. This collaboration is set to become the largest commercial Robotaxi service outside the US and China, illustrating the substantial scale of WeRide's operations.

As a participant in the Abu Dhabi Smart & Autonomous Systems Council, WeRide plays a crucial role in shaping local regulatory frameworks for autonomous mobility. The company plans to commence commercial driverless rides progressively from summer 2025, pending regulatory approval.
