OpenAI is collaborating with Abu Dhabi's tech firm G42 to construct a massive data center in the desert, consuming 5 gigawatts of power and covering 10 square miles. This facility will be one of the world's largest AI infrastructures. The project is part of OpenAI's "Stargate" initiative, aimed at creating supercomputing clusters for advanced AI model training and operations.
The data center's scale surpasses any existing global project, occupying an area larger than Monaco. Its power consumption is over four times that of OpenAI's first 1.2-gigawatt "Stargate" data center in Texas, equating to the output of five nuclear power plants.
G42, founded in 2018 and chaired by UAE's National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is a key partner in this venture. OpenAI had already formed a strategic partnership with G42 in 2023 to advance AI applications in the Middle East.
Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, plays a crucial role in this collaboration. It has invested $1.5 billion in G42 and its President, Brad Smith, has joined G42's board. Microsoft's Azure cloud services will underpin the "Stargate" project, enhancing its global cloud computing presence.
