Microsoft has announced the open-sourcing of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), now compatible with Linux. WSL, a notable feature introduced by Microsoft in 2016, allows users to run a Linux environment directly on Windows without requiring a separate virtual machine or dual-boot setup. This capability enables developers to easily install and use various Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, and Kali, allowing seamless project development across both Windows and Linux platforms.
