The Romanian Customs Authority has successfully implemented 27 MX908 handheld mass spectrometers from 908 Devices Inc. (MASS) to bolster its border security operations. These innovative devices are actively being used for the detection and identification of trace drugs and explosives, providing customs officers with crucial real-time data to facilitate swift and informed decisions during inspections.
"We have already experienced the benefits of the MX908 and are excited about the possibilities this technology enables in the field," stated Andrei-Cristian Pârvu, General Director of the National Customs Imaging Analysis Center. The MX908 stands out by being able to identify trace levels of substances on the exterior of vehicles, containers, and packages, allowing officers to initiate secondary screenings that can potentially prevent illegal activities such as drug trafficking and the crossing of explosive materials.
The deployment of the MX908 is part of the Customs Control Equipment Instrument program by the European Union, which aims to provide member states with advanced tools for securing borders. The order was facilitated through 908 Devices’ channel partner, MATE-FIN, with delivery completed by the end of last year and training and deployment finalized in early 2025.
Kevin J. Knopp, CEO and Co-founder of 908 Devices, emphasized the importance of equipping customs and border agencies with advanced technology to detect unseen threats, stating that 908 Devices is committed to supporting the Romanian Customs Authority in their mission for enhanced safety and security at the borders.
