  • Iridium Communications (IRDM, Financial) announces partnership with Syniverse to launch Iridium NTN Direct service globally by 2026.
  • The partnership provides satellite connectivity, allowing Iridium access to 600 carriers in 170 countries through Syniverse.
  • Iridium NTN Direct to support global coverage for consumer devices, automobiles, and industrial applications.

Iridium Communications Inc. (IRDM), a leader in global satellite communications, has partnered with Syniverse to introduce the Iridium NTN Direct service for mobile network operators (MNOs) worldwide. This strategic move allows Iridium to integrate its satellite network with Syniverse's robust global platform, offering continuous global connectivity.

The collaboration leverages Syniverse's network, which serves approximately 600 carrier customers in 170 countries, connecting with over 830 mobile operators. This extensive reach is expected to significantly enhance Iridium's service offerings, fulfilling the demand for Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) solutions. According to GSMA, 85% of MNOs planning non-terrestrial network services favor LEO options for comprehensive global coverage.

Iridium NTN Direct, part of the forthcoming 3GPP Release 19, aims to provide standards-based direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity, narrow-band IoT messaging, and SOS capabilities. The service will cater to various sectors, including consumer electronics, automotive industries, and industrial applications in fields like agriculture, transportation, logistics, energy, and utilities.

The partnership addresses critical barriers such as authentication, billing, and roaming, which have historically challenged satellite-to-mobile integration. Syniverse's expertise in mobile interoperability and its established infrastructure will play a pivotal role in overcoming these challenges, facilitating seamless deployment and expanding global telecommunications infrastructure.

The first connected devices utilizing Iridium NTN Direct are anticipated to be available in 2026, contingent upon the completion of 3GPP Release 19 by the end of 2025. This positions Iridium at the forefront of direct-to-device satellite connectivity, poised to capitalize on the expanding market demand for comprehensive global coverage solutions.
