The New York Times has announced a licensing agreement with Amazon, allowing the tech giant to use its editorial content in artificial intelligence products. This marks the first generative AI-related licensing deal for the publisher.

Under this multi-year agreement, Amazon can utilize content from The New York Times, including its news articles, NYT Cooking, and The Athletic sports website. The content will be used to provide real-time summaries and brief excerpts in Amazon's products and services, such as Alexa, and to train Amazon's proprietary foundational models.

Earlier in 2023, The New York Times filed a copyright lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. In the first quarter of the year, the publisher recorded $4.4 million in pre-tax litigation expenses related to this lawsuit.
