Reddit Sues AI Startup Anthropic Over Unauthorized Data Use

Social media platform Reddit has filed a lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic, accusing it of unauthorized use of platform data, resulting in breach of contract and "illegal and unfair business practices." The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco, claims Anthropic used personal data to train AI models without user consent, harming Reddit. Following the news, Reddit's stock price rose over 6%.

Reddit describes Anthropic as a "reactionary AI company" that disregards Reddit's rules and user rights. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, disagrees with Reddit's claims and intends to defend itself. Since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI, Reddit has been a key source of user-generated content for training large AI models, including Anthropic's Claude.

In May, Reddit announced content licensing agreements with OpenAI and Google, emphasizing their respect for user privacy. Notably, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, a former Reddit board member, is a significant Reddit shareholder. Reddit's lawsuit seeks compensation and demands Anthropic comply with contractual and legal obligations, with a jury trial requested.
