The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced that Amazon has agreed to enhance measures against fake online reviews on its UK website. This follows a similar commitment by Google earlier this year after the CMA's investigation began five years ago. Amazon has pledged to strengthen its systems to tackle false reviews and misuse of product listings.

The CMA highlighted that misuse involves sellers hijacking reviews of well-performing products to falsely boost ratings of unrelated items. Amazon has committed to enforcing strict penalties on businesses that engage in such practices, potentially banning them from its UK platform.

According to the CMA, around 90% of UK consumers consider reviews when making purchasing decisions, with online reviews influencing up to £23 billion ($31 billion) in consumer spending annually. CMA CEO Sarah Cardell emphasized the importance of these new commitments, noting the significant impact of ratings and reviews on consumer choices.
