Smith+Nephew (SNN), a global medical technology company, has launched a new medial stabilized insert designed for its LEGION Total Knee System. This innovation is aligned with the rising trend of medial stabilized inserts, which have seen a sharp increase in utilization—from 4% in 2018 to 32% in 2023 of all Total Knee Arthroplasty procedures.
The new insert features a larger anterior medial lip and medial pivot kinematics, which aim to mimic the natural movement of the knee, boosting both stability and procedural versatility. The system offers flexibility to be used with or without the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), potentially improving surgical efficiency by reducing operating room time.
The LEGION TKS, with over 20 years of clinical success, supports both LEGION CONCELOC Cementless and LEGION Cemented Total Knee Systems. Initially available in the US on a limited basis, Smith+Nephew plans a full commercial release in 2025, with an introduction in the Canadian market set for 2026. This strategic move reinforces Smith+Nephew’s commitment to innovation in the knee replacement sector, amid a competitive landscape featuring major players like Stryker, Zimmer Biomet, and DePuy Synthes.
