Tesla (TSLA, Financial) is aiming to roll out its first robotaxi service in Austin on June 22, with initial operations limited to a small fleet of vehicles, according to a Wednesday post by CEO Elon Musk on the social media platform X.

Musk described the launch date as “tentative,” citing a strong focus on safety. The company may shift the timeline depending on the outcome of continued system checks.

Roughly 10 to 20 Model Y vehicles are expected to be deployed in a controlled section of the city. While fully self-driving, the cars will operate under remote human oversight at launch.

Tesla plans to extend the service to additional U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Francisco, later this year. However, details on access, pricing, and the scope of supervision are still limited.

Musk added that the participating vehicles will come straight from Tesla's production lines without hardware changes, suggesting all current models may eventually support unsupervised driving.
