Volt Lithium Corp., soon to become LibertyStream Infrastructure Partners Inc., is preparing to assemble and deploy its proprietary mobile Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) unit in the Bakken region of North Dakota. The company has scheduled the commissioning of this unit for the second half of June 2025. This strategic move is facilitated by a collaboration with Wellspring Hydro and supported by a substantial $2.5 million funding from the North Dakota Industrial Commission's Clean Sustainable Energy Authority and Renewable Energy Program.
Mark Watson, President and CEO of Wellspring, expressed enthusiasm for commencing field operations in North Dakota, highlighting that Volt is the only DLE company to receive funding from the State of North Dakota. Volt's proprietary technology is tailored to adapt to various brine chemistries, driving its expansion to the resource-rich Bakken region.
Volt's strategic location in North America's two largest oil-producing basins, the Permian and Bakken, underlines its capacity to produce significant quantities of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE). The Bakken's potential alone could yield up to 50,000 tonnes of LCE annually, with lithium concentrations nearly three times higher than those in the Permian Basin.
The company’s innovative approach integrates DLE units with existing salt-water disposal infrastructures in oilfields, circumventing the need for developing traditional greenfield lithium extraction facilities. This not only accelerates production timelines but also enhances project economics by eliminating extensive capital expenditures, such as drilling new wells and building pipeline networks.
Volt Lithium continues to demonstrate significant growth from its initial lab-scale production in Calgary to its field operations in the Permian Basin. The upcoming deployment in the Bakken is expected to further showcase the versatility and scalability of their DLE technology across different basins. This initiative reinforces Volt Lithium’s leadership in the U.S. critical mineral supply chain by efficiently extracting lithium from oilfield brines in North America's most prolific oil-producing regions.
