Lufthansa is bracing for a decline in demand for U.S. flights in the third quarter following the summer peak, according to CEO Carsten Spohr. The company observed stronger performance in the first quarter compared to last year, but anticipates demand leveling off in the third quarter.
Lufthansa, which operates 60 daily flights to the U.S. through its subsidiaries Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, and ITA Airways, notes that the impact of reduced demand is partly offset by strong demand from the U.S., where ticket prices are higher. Spohr mentioned plans to increase seat sales in the local U.S. market to counterbalance the decline.
The ongoing restructuring at Lufthansa is reportedly progressing well, with expectations to contribute approximately 1.5 billion euros ($1.73 billion) in gross profit by 2026.
