AMD (AMD, Financial) is ramping up its software capabilities to better compete with NVIDIA (NVDA) in the AI chip market. The company is collaborating with several AI startups and has recently acquired several software firms to enhance its AI software platform, ROCm (Radeon Open Compute). This was disclosed by Vamsi Boppana, AMD’s Senior Vice President of AI Business, who emphasized the company's strategic journey towards a robust software foundation.

Cohere, an AI company closely working with AMD, has acknowledged significant progress in AMD’s software, which now enables more efficient operation of its software on AMD chips. Although Cohere's CEO did not specify the number of chips in use, he highlighted their substantial role in global computing infrastructure.

AMD is also strengthening its collaboration with OpenAI, particularly in developing the next-gen MI450 chip architecture. OpenAI has significantly influenced its memory design and multi-chip expansion capabilities. The MI450 will be a crucial component of AMD’s upcoming Helios server, designed to handle large-scale AI model training and inference.

Furthermore, AMD is investing heavily in its MI400 series of AI accelerators to rival NVIDIA's flagship products. To boost its AI hardware ecosystem, AMD recently acquired server manufacturer ZT Systems, aiming to accelerate R&D and production capabilities.
