  • STMicroelectronics (STM, Financial) unveils a new Human Presence Detection solution, reducing power consumption by over 20% daily.
  • The technology integrates FlightSense Time-of-Flight sensors with AI, ensuring enhanced privacy and security without using cameras.
  • Projections show the Time-of-Flight sensor market growing from $2.2 billion in 2024 to $3.8 billion by 2030.

STMicroelectronics has introduced an advanced Human Presence Detection (HPD) solution tailored for laptops and PCs, featuring the integration of FlightSense Time-of-Flight sensors with artificial intelligence algorithms. This innovative development aims to enhance user experience by reducing power consumption by more than 20% daily and improving security features while ensuring user privacy.

The 5th generation HPD solution is built on the VL53L8CP, an 8x8 multizone ToF sensor, combined with proprietary AI algorithms. It facilitates functionalities such as Adaptive Screen Dimming, which tracks the user's head orientation to dim the screen when not in use, Walk-Away Lock and Wake-on-Attention, and Multi-Person Detection, offering a comprehensive privacy protection solution. Unlike traditional webcam-based solutions, this sensor-based technology ensures that no images are captured, safeguarding user privacy.

This new solution has already been integrated into over 260 laptop and PC models, reflecting its readiness for widespread deployment. The market potential for Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology is substantial, with the market expected to rise from $2.2 billion in 2024 to $3.8 billion by 2030, marking a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.5%.

STMicroelectronics' commitment to innovation is further demonstrated by the extensive AI-based development process that supported this solution. It involved extensive data collection and AI training to ensure the product's reliability and effectiveness. This launch underscores STMicroelectronics’ continued leadership in advancing sensor technology applications, aligning with broader industry trends toward enhanced energy efficiency and AI-driven solutions in consumer electronics.
