Apple Inc. (AAPL, Financial) is reportedly in the early stages of considering the acquisition of the AI search startup Perplexity. Although no formal negotiations have started, this move highlights Apple's intent to strengthen its presence in the AI search sector. Apple aims to integrate Perplexity's AI search capabilities into its Safari browser to reduce its reliance on Google's (GOOGL) search engine, especially amid recent antitrust measures proposed by the U.S. Department of Justice against Google.
Perplexity, supported by investments from NVIDIA (NVDA), specializes in AI search summary technology similar to Google Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT, offering users a click-free search experience. The company is valued at $14 billion following its latest financing round. If this acquisition proceeds, it would rank among Apple's largest acquisitions.
Previously, Meta Platforms (META) attempted to acquire Perplexity but was unsuccessful. Meta continues to invest heavily in AI, committing $14.8 billion to Scale AI and establishing a new superintelligence division under CEO Alexandr Wang's leadership.
