Countdown to EU Penalties for Meta's Ad Model

Brussels warns the clock is ticking on Meta's ad-or-pay setup.

EU's been on Meta's (META, Financial) case over its pay-or-consent setup. Back in April, Brussels slapped Meta with a €200 million fine for not playing by the Digital Markets Act rules.

Now, after some half-hearted tweaks, the Commission's not convinced and if Meta doesn't fully comply by June 27, daily fines could start piling up.

Meta fired back, accusing the EU of picking on its €213 billion business and insisting their subscription-plus-ads choice actually exceeds what the law demands.

But with gatekeepers like Apple (AAPL, Financial), Amazon (AMZN, Financial) and Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) already facing DMA heat, it's clear regulators aren't bluffing.

Meta needs to either make real changes or watch the euros drain away in penalty payments. Keep an eye on whether Brussels tightens the screws—especially now that Apple's rushed to tweak its App Store to dodge similar fines.
