Tesla (TSLA, Financial) CEO Elon Musk announced the company's successful delivery of a Model Y using full self-driving technology from the factory to a customer's home. This achievement highlights Tesla's advancements in autonomous driving. The vehicle navigated through urban areas and highways without any human intervention, completing the delivery ahead of schedule.
Musk shared this milestone on the X platform, noting that this was the first time a fully autonomous delivery occurred on public highways without a driver or remote operator. Although no video or images were included in the announcement, Musk promised that footage would soon be available. Tesla's AI and Autopilot leader, Ashok Elluswamy, mentioned the vehicle reached speeds up to 72 mph (approximately 116 km/h).
This autonomous delivery precedes Tesla's highly anticipated Robotaxi service launch, which began with around ten Model Ys serving as the initial fleet. Users can summon these vehicles via the Robotaxi App, which automatically syncs payment and other settings.
Musk envisions large-scale production of Robotaxi and humanoid robots as crucial to Tesla's future growth, especially as the company faces challenges in key markets and executive departures.
