- California American Water submits a rate request reflecting $750 million in infrastructure improvements.
- The proposal includes investments in water treatment plants, pipelines, and storage tanks.
- Customers may see a water bill change of $3 decrease to $17 increase, depending on the area, starting January 2027.
California American Water has officially filed a request with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for new rates that account for approximately $750 million in water and wastewater system investments. These enhancements are projected to span from 2025 through 2028. The proposed rate adjustments are a part of the company's dedication to replacing aging infrastructure and ensuring the provision of safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water services.
Kevin Tilden, President of California American Water, emphasized the importance of these investments in maintaining the quality of water services across the state. The improvements detailed in the filing include the construction of new water treatment facilities, the replacement of old pipelines, and the upgrading of storage tanks, pumping stations, meters, hydrants, and more.
Should the CPUC approve the filed rates, customers will experience variations in their water bills, ranging from a $3 decrease to a $17 increase per month starting January 2027, contingent on their service location. This rate request follows the last general rate case from July 2022 and is subject to an 18-month review process by the CPUC. During this period, customers are encouraged to participate through written comments and public hearings.
Additionally, California American Water plans to expand its Customer Assistance Program (CAP), which currently offers 25-35 percent discounts to eligible customers. This expansion will include additional support for multi-family building assistance in the Monterey service area.
