ArcBest® (ARCB), a prominent player in supply chain logistics, has completed a pilot program evaluating a Class 8 long-range electric semi-truck in over-the-road operations. The pilot, conducted through ArcBest's less-than-truckload carrier ABF Freight®, underscores the company's commitment to integrating emerging technologies that enhance operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Over a three-week duration, ABF operated a Tesla Semi across typical dispatch lanes, including over-the-road routes between service centers in Reno, Nevada, and Sacramento, California. The electric Semi covered a total of 4,494 miles, averaging 321 miles per day, with an overall energy efficiency of 1.55 kWh per mile.

According to Dennis Anderson, ArcBest's chief innovation officer, "Freight transportation plays a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions. Although decarbonization presents complex challenges, such as infrastructure needs and alternative fuel development, it also fosters innovation. The Tesla Semi exemplifies the progress in achieving a more sustainable future for freight."

The Tesla Semi performed impressively on various routes, including the demanding 7,200-foot climb over Donner Pass. Drivers positively noted the vehicle's comfort, safety, and usability, with features such as center seat configuration and wide visibility enhancing the driving experience.

Matt Godfrey, President of ABF Freight, emphasized that the EV must meet or exceed the performance and cost targets of their most efficient diesel units. The pilot highlighted the need for continued development of charging infrastructure for broader EV semi deployment.

ArcBest is actively exploring electric vehicles within its operations, currently operating nine electric yard tractors, two electric forklifts, and two Class 6 electric straight trucks. The company remains focused on leveraging innovation to enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and deliver sustainable logistics solutions that create value for customers.
