Meta, the American tech giant, has completed the acquisition of PlayAI, a small AI startup specializing in voice technology. According to an internal memo, the entire PlayAI team will join Meta soon and report to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined Meta from another company, Sesame AI.
Meta has prioritized AI development this year, investing heavily in infrastructure such as chips and data centers, while also recruiting top talent to build AI models and features. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced a major restructuring of the AI division, appointing former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang to lead a new team called the "Meta Super Intelligence Lab."
While the financial terms of the PlayAI acquisition have not been disclosed, a Meta spokesperson confirmed the deal without providing further details. The memo highlights that PlayAI's work on creating natural sound and an easy-to-use sound creation platform aligns with Meta's AI initiatives, including roles in Meta AI, wearable devices, and audio content creation.
