  • CF Industries (CF, Financial) has launched a CO2 dehydration and compression unit at its Donaldsonville Complex to sequester up to 2 million metric tons of CO2 annually.
  • ExxonMobil, as CF Industries' carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) partner, will handle the CO2's transportation and storage.
  • The project marks a significant step in CF Industries' decarbonization efforts, aiming to produce 1.9 million tons of low-carbon ammonia per year.

CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (CF) has announced the successful start-up of its new carbon dioxide (CO2) dehydration and compression unit at the Donaldsonville Complex in Louisiana. This facility is set to play a critical role in enabling the transportation and permanent geological sequestration of up to 2 million metric tons of CO2 annually, significantly reducing emissions. This initiative is in partnership with ExxonMobil, which will be responsible for the permanent storage of CO2.

ExxonMobil is currently storing CO2 from the Donaldsonville Complex through enhanced oil recovery, with plans to transition to dedicated permanent storage upon receiving necessary permits. Their Rose CCS project, one of the many along the Gulf Coast, awaits final decisions on permits expected later this year.

Tony Will, president and CEO of CF Industries, emphasized the project's importance, highlighting its role in the company's decarbonization journey, providing low-carbon ammonia, and generating 45Q tax credits. This move is a part of CF Industries’ broader mission to provide sustainable clean energy solutions and reduce emissions across its global operations.
