CARFAX Canada has taken a significant step forward in the fight against vehicle identification number (VIN) fraud with the introduction of its Vehicle Monitoring tool. This innovative, subscription-based service is the first of its kind in Canada, aimed at empowering vehicle owners to detect and respond to potential VIN fraud, safety issues, and other important vehicle-related details. For an annual fee of $84.95, consumers receive real-time VIN activity alerts, VIN fraud alerts, and a monthly refreshed Vehicle History Report. The service is designed to provide early warnings, thus minimizing the stress and complications of handling a VIN fraud incident.
According to CARFAX Canada President Shawn Vording, it is crucial for vehicle owners to stay informed about their vehicle's history, especially as VIN cloning remains a prevalent issue in Canada, with over 372,000 potentially cloned VINs reported. VIN cloning can lead to several negative consequences, including vehicle seizure by authorities and denial of insurance coverage.
Adding to the robustness of its VIN fraud detection tools, CARFAX Canada has integrated export data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), which will be included in their Vehicle History Reports at no additional cost. This collaboration aims to enhance the precision of fraud detection, providing valuable data to car dealers, buyers, insurers, and law enforcement agencies to combat vehicle fraud effectively.
Zee Hamid, Ontario’s Associate Solicitor General for Auto Theft and Bail Reform, commended CARFAX Canada’s efforts, stating that the tool represents a critical advance in increasing transparency and security within Canada's vehicle marketplace. The integration of CBSA data exemplifies the powerful collaboration between private and government sectors to safeguard Canadians from auto fraud.
