AECOM (ACM), the global infrastructure leader based in Dallas, has been selected as an ecosystem delivery partner by VolkerRail for the Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE) in England. The company will provide multidisciplinary design services for one of the UK's busiest railway corridors, enhancing track integrity and efficiency for millions of passengers annually.
The SRE initiative, established by Network Rail in April 2024, is a comprehensive ÂŁ9 billion project aimed at renewing and upgrading railway infrastructure across the Southern Region of England. This region spans Devon to Kent, incorporating major routes and serving key transport hubs, including Gatwick and Southampton airports.
Network Rail's Southern Region supports approximately 700 million passenger journeys annually, highlighting the critical role of this project in maintaining and boosting railway performance. AECOM's involvement will focus on topographical surveys, track and electrical track engineering designs, and the management of project and engineering services. These efforts are in line with the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Project 13 principles, promoting collaborative and efficient infrastructure delivery.
Mark Southwell, AECOM’s chief executive of global Transportation business, emphasized the firm's robust experience in rail and mass transit design. AECOM's long-standing success with UK rail projects positions it to effectively contribute to the modernisation and safety enhancements of the nation's railway systems.
AECOM's participation in the SRE is expected to reinforce its strategic relationship with VolkerRail and solidify its role in delivering critical infrastructure projects within the UK. The company's commitment to sustainable and resilient solutions continues to drive substantial progress toward a more efficient rail network for the future.
