Jacobs (J) has been chosen to provide design services for the West Seattle Link Extension, a major transportation infrastructure project by Sound Transit. The extension will add 4.1 miles of light rail, featuring a new bridge, tunnel, and four stations, connecting Seattle's SODO neighborhood to West Seattle's Alaska Junction neighborhood.
Slated to commence service in 2032, the extension aims to cut travel times by up to 50% on key lines and offer an alternative route during peak demand, significantly alleviating traffic on the West Seattle Bridge. Jacobs will oversee Phase 1 design and design validation for this project.
With a robust annual revenue of approximately $12 billion and a workforce of about 45,000, Jacobs has a well-established presence in the Puget Sound region, having previously delivered around 30 miles of light rail expansions for Sound Transit over a span of 70 years. This new contract is poised to strengthen Jacobs' role in sustainable transportation solutions, a sector gaining importance as urban areas work to reduce emissions and enhance connectivity.
Besides the immediate benefits in reduced travel times and improved access, the West Seattle Link Extension is expected to catalyze new development opportunities near the stations, fostering economic growth and enhancing community connections in the Seattle area.
