Google (GOOG, Financial) just landed one of the biggest wins in AI by agreeing to power ChatGPT on its cloud. OpenAI will still spread its workload across Azure, Oracle (ORCL, Financial) Cloud and CoreWeave (CRWV, Financial), but it has tapped Google's data centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands and Norway.
This move underscores how years of pouring resources into custom tensor units and a finely tuned network backbone are finally bearing fruit. Even with roughly twelve percent of the global cloud market, Google feels a little closer to catching its larger rivals.
For developers and enterprises, seeing OpenAI choose Google Cloud brings extra confidence. As the hunger for large‑language‑model computing keeps growing, Google will need to keep its services reliable, cost‑effective and fast if it wants to stay in the race.
