PayPal (PYPL) has announced the launch of PayPal World, a pioneering global payment platform designed to connect some of the world's largest digital wallets and payment systems. This initiative marks a significant stride toward global payment interoperability, incorporating partners such as Mercado Pago, NPCI (UPI), PayPal, Tenpay Global, and Venmo, collectively representing approximately two billion users worldwide.
Set to launch in fall 2025, PayPal World will initially feature interoperability with PayPal and Venmo, allowing consumers to conduct international transactions using their local payment systems. The platform is crafted to be technology-agnostic, supporting future payment technologies including AI-powered shopping and stablecoins.
For the first time, PayPal and Venmo will achieve full interoperability, facilitating global peer-to-peer payments. By 2026, Venmo users will also gain access to PayPal's extensive merchant network, enhancing their ability to make both online and in-store purchases globally.
With its open commerce APIs and cloud-native multi-region deployment, PayPal World aims to simplify cross-border commerce, providing an efficient and secure payment environment. This development is expected to significantly expand PayPal's global reach and addressable market, offering substantial new opportunities for merchants to tap into nearly two billion consumers without requiring additional integration.
