OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed concerns about the potential for a global fraud crisis driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted the vulnerability of current authentication methods, such as voice recognition, which can be easily exploited by AI. Altman warned that while AI-generated voice calls are a current threat, the technology could soon evolve to indistinguishable video impersonations.

Although OpenAI is not developing such tools, Altman emphasized the need for global preparedness against AI misuse, including potential attacks on critical infrastructure or the creation of bioweapons. He also raised concerns about losing control over AI systems or granting them excessive decision-making power.

Altman is not alone in his apprehension; the FBI and U.S. officials have issued warnings about AI-driven scams. Recently, there were attempts to imitate the voice of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo using AI.

During a Federal Reserve interview, Altman discussed AI's economic impact, expressing less concern than some peers about AI's effect on jobs. He believes the future job market is unpredictable, though certain job categories may disappear while new ones emerge.
