Dow Jones Sets a New High

Stocks higher for the week

U.S. market indexes ended the week mixed on Friday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average setting another new high.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18,516.55 for a gain of 10.14 points or 0.05%. The Standard & Poor's 500 was lower for the day closing at 2,161.74 for a loss of 2.01 points or 0.09%. The Nasdaq Composite also closed lower at 5,029.59 for a loss of 4.47 point or 0.09%.

In the broader market, other leading U.S. market indexes were also mixed on Friday. The small-cap Russell 2000 was higher at 1,205.31 for a gain of 3.14 points or 0.26%; the S&P 600 closed at 740.72 for a gain of 1.26 points or 0.17%; the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index closed at 1,543.63 for a loss of 0.43 points or 0.03%; the Russell 3000 closed at 1,275.33 for a loss of 0.70 or 0.05%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index closed at 625.84 for a gain of 1.98 points or 0.32%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average the following stocks led gains:

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 2.02% and the S&P 500 gained 1.48%.

The leading economic reports for Friday included the Consumer Price Index and Industrial Production. The Consumer Price Index was higher for the month with an increase of 0.2% which matched the prior month and was just below consensus of 0.3%. Year over year the Consumer Price Index is up 1% and excluding food and energy the Index is up 2.3%. Industrial production was also improved. The monthly report showed an increase of 0.6% in production.

As the market continues to show signs of economic improvement and the earnings outlook continues to be positive, many investors continue to remain bullish on stocks. In a CNBC report Friday, market specialists discussed their outlooks for the current market environment and trading strategies for the near term.
