U.S. market indexes were higher Tuesday.
For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18,161.94 for a gain of 75.54 points or 0.42%. The Standard & Poor's 500 was also higher, closing at 2,139.60 for a gain of 13.10 points or 0.62%. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher at 5,243.84 for a gain of 44.01 points or 0.85%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 15.12 for a loss of 1.09 points or 6.72%.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:
- UnitedHealth (UNH, Financial) 7.15%.
- Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 2.18%.
- DuPont (DD, Financial) 1.25%.
- Intel (INTC, Financial) 1.19%.
- Walmart (WMT, Financial) 0.95%.
- Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) 0.88%.
Leading economic reports for the day included the Consumer Price Index and the Housing Market Index. The Consumer Price Index was up 0.3% for the month and 1.5% for the year. The Housing Market Index decreased from 65 the previous month to 63.
Stocks were higher Tuesday as earnings have been positive to start the week with most banking sector earnings reports exceeding expectations. Dow Jones Industrial Average bank Goldman Sachs reported earnings on Tuesday with revenue and earnings beating analysts’ expectations.
