A list of the most meaningful long positions found among the top holdings of hedge funds has been composed by Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research using data from Solactive and FactSet. This list can be found at zerohedge.com.
The list covers "50 stocks that most frequently appear among the largest 10 holdings of hedge funds." This is based off the holdings of 61 funds as of Sept. 30
According to the aforementioned sources, Amazon (AMZN, Financial) is the leader of the pack with a presence in 61 funds. The American e-commerce company headquartered in Seattle is closely followed by Facebook (FB, Financial). The online social media company appears in the top 10 holdings of 57 funds.
Other stocks that rank in the list's top 10 are Charter Communications (CHTR, Financial), Alphabet (GOOG, Financial)(GOOGL, Financial), Apple (AAPL, Financial), Microsoft (MSFT, Financial), Yahoo (YHOO, Financial), Allergan (AGN, Financial), Bank of America (BAC, Financial) and Priceline (PCLN).
Monsanto (MON) is at the bottom of the ranking. It is a top 10 holding in 12 funds.
The average number of hedge funds holding a stock is 23 and the median is 18 funds.
The stock that has been characterized with the highest total return is Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) with 43%. However, the stock appears in the bottom five stocks as it is present in the top 10 holdings of only 14 funds.
Pioneer is tailgated by WhiteWave Foods Co. (WWAV) with a total return of 39% year to date and T-Mobile US Inc. (TMUS) with a total return of 37% year to date.
The average and median total return year to date is 12%.
WhiteWave Foods is also in the group of the stocks characterized by the highest proportion of the market capitalization owned by hedge funds, at 19%.
CommScope (COMM) is the leader of this subgroup with 37%. It is followed by Dell Technologies (DVMT) and Expedia (EXPE) with 30%.
Social network LinkedIn (LNKD) also stands out in this category. Twenty percent of its market capitalization is owned by hedge funds.
The average and median percentages of market capitalization owned by hedge funds are 11% and 8%.
