U.S. market indexes were lower on Friday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19933.81 for a gain of 14.93 points or 0.07%. The S&P 500 closed at 2263.79 for a gain of 2.83 points or 0.13%. The Nasdaq Composite closed lower at 4,760.69 for a loss of 49.19 points or 1.02%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.44 for a gain of 0.01 points or 0.09%.

For the week the Dow Jones gained 0.44%, the S&P 500 gained 0.24% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.45%.

Economic reports affecting market trading on Friday included the following:

  • New home sales increased to 592,000 SAAR from 563,000 SAAR in the previous month.
  • The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 98.2 from 98.
  • The Baker Hughes Rig Count report showed an increase of six rigs in North America for the week.
