US Market Indexes Lower on Monday

Earnings and presidential uncertainty affect market trading

U.S. market indexes were lower on Monday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19799.85 for a loss of -27.40 points or -0.14%. The S&P 500 closed at 2265.20 for a loss of -6.11 points or -0.27%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5552.94 for a loss of -2.39 points or -0.04%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 11.77 for a gain of 0.23 points or 1.99%.

Monday’s market movers

Fourth quarter earnings and uncertainty regarding President Donald Trump’s pro-growth policies affected market trading. No market moving economic reports were on the calendar Monday.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

General Electric (GE, Financial) -2.55%

Merck (MRK, Financial) -1.15%

ExxonMobil (XOM, Financial) -1.07%

Boeing (BA, Financial) -1.06%

Pfizer (PFE, Financial) -0.98%

In the broad market, energy and financial stocks led losses. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were higher with a gain of 0.18%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1347.84 for a loss of -4.01 points or -0.30%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 825.10 for a loss of -2.46 points or -0.30%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7983.82 for a loss of -28.63 points or -0.36%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9638.29 for a loss of -12.59 points or -0.13%.
